A Day of Hope and Inspiration for Homeless Women in Miami

Miami (June 27, 2007) –  On June 22nd 200 homeless and at-risk women from the Overtown Miami homeless shelters joined The Women’s Alliance for a day of inspiration, and hope at the Miami-based nonprofit’s Empowered Women’s Day.

The day was part of The Women’s Alliance’s “Empowered Women’s Series,” an innovative seminar series developed for The Women’s Alliance by nationally recognized self-help experts to assist low-income and formerly homeless women transition successfully to work.  The Women’s Alliance is a national nonprofit organization based in Miami that provides professional clothing and career support to women transitioning to work.

The inspirational day started with a prayer delivered by Nifetta Thomas, Chair of the Lillies of the Valley, a mentoring group to support homeless and at-risk women, followed by keynote speaker Marci Shimoff, author of “The Chicken Soup Women’s Series.”  Janet Attwood, co-author of The Passion Test, facilitated the participants through the steps needed to identify their passions and turn them into action.  Cynthia Kersey, New York Times bestselling author of Unstoppable Women capped of the day by mentoring the women on how to translate goals into action. 

Participant Olive Johnson said “The Empowered Women’s Series helped me keep hope alive, connect with my inner voice and spirit despite the reality of difficult situations.”
